| In January
2012, a recently restored 1968 Camaro SS rolled into Street Rods Forever
with an engine issue. Although the frame off restoration was cosmetically
perfect, Sean, the owner, was having a problem with the engine. The big
block Chevy 396 engine ran fine when first started but once the engine was
warmed up it wouldn't start or run smoothly. |

The engine bay, like the rest of the car, was clean and near factory perfect. After pulling the air cleaner, the causes for Sean's problems became evident. First, the carburetor choke wasn't connected to anything. This was resolved by installing an automatic choke kit. There were also 2 conditions that were causing the fuel to be heated by the engine. The builder had used a long section of rubber fuel line that ran across the top of the engine. This was replaced by a steel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor. A 1/2 inch thick insulator was also installed between the 4bbl carb and the intake manifold. These were pretty
simple repairs that solved the problem. Fortunately, Sean brought the
classic Camaro to Street Rods Forever before the rubber fuel line contributed
to a engine fire that would have ruined a great restoration. |

|
A small cosmetic change was needed under the rally hood to accommodate the 1/2 inch taller air cleaner. By trimming insulation out of the hood and using a lower profile air cleaner, air was able to flow in from the opening at the rear of the hood while still allowing the hood closed correctly. Sometimes, it's the
little things that separate a top flight restoration from the average.
The guys at SRF have the knowledge and experience to recognize and resolve
these issues. |
