It seems like, for the past 10 or 15 years, every time I open a magazine that is Hot Rod oriented (Street Rodder, Rod & Custom, Rodder's Digest, etc.) there is a story about how someone has just found an incredible deal on a "barn car"…….you know, one that someone got tired of messing with or ran out of money or got involved with raising a family and didn't have the time anymore. They run the gamut from a bone-stock Model A or B that "the old man was going to restore", clear up to a Deuce roadster that was built in the 60's and just needs a little "freshening up". But it's always someone else, not me. Oh yeah, I've always got my eye open when I'm on the road or when I'm reading the classified ads in my local newspaper. I do see a lot of stuff just rusting away in a field, and when I stop and ask about it, it turns out to be Bubba's and someday he's going to get around to "fixin' it up". "Naw," Bubba says, "I been holdin' on to that fer a long time, and I sure don't want to part with it now for any price." I gave up a while back on ever finding my "barn car". Then, last year, one of the guys in The Donut Gang (no, we are not really a club…we all hate rules!) called me up and asked "Are you interested in a very clean, stock Model A Tudor sedan for one grand?" Do I enjoy breathing? Does a bear …. in the woods? Heck yeah I'm interested! It's been over a year now, and the deal is still there. But, so far, it hasn't come together. Problems with the owner's health, problems with how to get it out of the barn (it's behind 40 years of "stuff" stacked all the way around it), and like all hot rod projects, one thing leads to another. But, the deal is still alive, and in the past twenty years or so I've developed a large amount of patience. It will come together. My point is this……………they are STILL out there! It's not just a "myth". Do not give up looking. You can respond to Too Low at Richard@streetrodsforever.com |
